The relationship between internet addiction and attitudes towards marital infidelity: The mediating role of curiosity

Abstract :
The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of curiosity in the relationship between Internet addiction and attitudes toward marital infidelity. Adopting a correlational research design, the study employed path analysis to explore the structural relationships among the variables. The statistical population consisted of 262 married women residing in Mashhad in 2024, selected through convenience sampling. Participants completed the Young Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Curiosity and Exploration Inventory-II (CEI-II) developed by Kashdan, and the Attitudes Toward Infidelity Scale (ATIS) developed by Whatley. Data were analyzed using correlation analysis and path modeling via SPSS and AMOS software. Findings revealed a significant positive association between Internet addiction and both curiosity and permissive attitudes toward marital infidelity (p < 0.01). Additionally, curiosity was significantly and positively associated with attitudes toward infidelity and served as a significant mediator in the relationship between Internet addiction and such attitudes (p < 0.05). The hypothesized model demonstrated satisfactory goodness of fit. These findings suggest that Internet addiction may indirectly intensify unfavorable attitudes toward marital fidelity by enhancing levels of curiosity. Accordingly, the development of preventive and educational interventions aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of excessive Internet use on marital dynamics is recommended
