The relationship between internet addiction and attitudes towards marital infidelity: The mediating role of curiosity

Abstract :
The present study investigated the mediating role of curiosity in the relationship between Internet addiction and attitudes toward marital infidelity. Employing a descriptive–correlational design, path analysis was conducted to examine the hypothesized model. The statistical population consisted of 262 married women from Mashhad, Iran, in 2024, who were selected through convenience sampling. The research instruments included Young’s Internet Addiction Test (IAT; 1998), the Curiosity and Exploration Inventory-II (CEI-II; Kashdan et al., 2004), and Whitley’s Attitudes Toward Infidelity Scale (ATIS; 2008). Data analysis was performed using correlation tests and path analysis in SPSS and AMOS software. Findings revealed that Internet addiction was positively and significantly associated with both curiosity and attitudes toward marital infidelity (p < 0.01). Moreover, curiosity showed a significant positive relationship with attitudes toward infidelity and acted as a meaningful mediator between Internet addiction and attitudes toward marital infidelity (p < 0.05). The proposed model demonstrated an acceptable level of goodness of fit. These results suggest that Internet addiction may intensify negative attitudes toward marital fidelity by enhancing curiosity. Therefore, developing preventive educational and counseling interventions to reduce the detrimental effects of excessive Internet use on marital relationships is recommended.
