Abstract :
The present study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between parents' irrational beliefs and self-destructive behavior in adolescent girls, with the mediating role of parental anxiety and the parent-adolescent relationship. The statistical population consisted of high school girls in Tehran and their mothers. Sampling was conducted in a multistage cluster random method, first based on educational districts and then with the cooperation of district and school administrations, leading to a sample size of 160 participants. Data were collected using the Parent-Adolescent Relationship Survey (PCRS), the Chronic Self-Destructiveness Scale (CSDS), the Irrational Beliefs Test (IBT), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Data analysis was performed using Pearson correlation coefficient and path analysis through SPSS-25 and Amos-25 statistical software. Model fit indicators showed a good fit between the proposed model and the data. Moreover, the causal relationship between parents' irrational beliefs and adolescent girls' self-destructive behavior was confirmed both directly and indirectly, via the mediating variables. In conclusion, it can be said that mothers' irrational beliefs, through their detrimental impact on the parent-adolescent relationship, may lead to self-destructive behavior in adolescents. Considering these findings can be beneficial in treating adolescents' self-destructive behaviors.
