The Effectiveness of RihaCom’s Working Memory Training on Cognitive Flexibility and Cognitive Inhibition in Adolescents

Abstract :

The present study examined the effectiveness of working memory training on cognitive flexibility and cognitive inhibition in adolescents. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest and a 3-week follow-up, including a control group, was employed. The population consisted of all male students enrolled in the first grade of lower secondary school (ages 12–14) in District 7 of Tehran during the 2024–2025 academic year. Thirty students were selected through convenience sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) was used to assess cognitive flexibility, and the Stroop Color-Word Test was employed to measure cognitive inhibition. The intervention included 10 sessions of working memory training using the RehaCom program, each lasting 20 minutes. Results of repeated measures ANOVA indicated that the experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in both cognitive flexibility and cognitive inhibition in the posttest stage (p < .05). These improvements remained stable at the 3-week follow-up. Findings suggest that working memory training may serve as an effective approach to enhance cognitive flexibility and cognitive inhibition among adolescents.
